US Vice President Mike Pence has returned to US Congress for a joint session after they had escaped mob violence.

Senators were filtering back into the House chamber with lawmakers expected to continue the tally of Electoral College votes.

Pence called it “a dark day in the history of the United States Capitol,” adding that “We condemn the violence that took place here in the strongest possible terms. We grieve the loss of life in these hallowed halls as well as those injured in our Capitol today,”

“As we reconvene in this chamber, the world will again witness the resilience and strength of our democracy,” he said.

He wrapped up by saying: “Let’s get back to work.”

And the senators in the chamber applauded.

The US congress are to arrive at a conclusion in the next few hours but that is dependent on whether a senator joins House Republicans in challenging the results in other states.

If that happens, both chambers will once again have to go into session for two hours of debate before another vote on the objections.
