The president of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, has warned against the spread of fake news about actors on social media platforms and blogs.

Emeka in a statement signed by his SSA on Media and Publicity, Kemi Adekomi, said the act of spreading unconfirmed news about actors especially death announcements is callous and shouldn’t be encouraged.

The statement was released on their official Instagram page on Thursday, July 7.

The president went further to say that the Guild has joined hands with law enforcement to treat such cases with seriousness.

He vowed to punish those involved in the act and he warned that anyone caught will equally be subjected to the necessary punishment.

An excerpt of the statement read, “There have been a series of fake reports of death of major star actors like Olu Jacobs, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, John Okafor (Mr Ibu), Genevieve Nnaji, Pete Edochie and many others on social media just to generate followers on their blogs and pages.

Mr Rollas describes such actions as callous and warns that the Guild has set up machinery in collaboration with relevant law enforcement agents to track down and apprehend heartless culprits behind these evil acts.

“We can’t fold our arms and watch this misdemeanour continue unabated… “
