The Federal High Court Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept and publish the name of Godswill Akpabio, as the candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for Akwa Ibom North/West Senatorial District in the next year’s election.

Justice Emeka Nwite, who delivered the judgement, held that INEC acted illegally by refusing to accept and publish Akpabio’s name even when it was sent to it by the APC as it’s candidate.

Akpabio has been in a legal battle with a retired deputy inspector general of police, Udom Ekpoudom, over who becomes the senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.

The former minister first contested the APC presidential primary but stepped down for Bola Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, who emerged as the party’s presidential candidate.

Akpabio’s activities may have contributed to the fractionalisation of the APC in Akwa Ibom State.
