Atiku says won’t renew CBN gov. tenure

Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has said that he would name a new Central Bank of Nigeria’s governor, if he is elected.

Atiku is among the 43 presidential candidates vying to become Nigeria’s President.

The main opposition President candidate, who said this at a meeting in Lagos, also said he would not renew Mr. Emefiele’s tenure when his first term ends in June.

He added that he would float the naira.

Godwin Emefiele was appointed as the CBN governor in 2014.

According to Mr. Abubakar, the CBN Governor has not pursued the right policies.

“I don’t think he’s pursued the right policies. We have to have the right people in there.”

Many have continued to question the Apex Bank’s decision to retain the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 14 per cent.

Responding to a question from Kaftan Post, an economist, Friday Efih said, Mr. Atiku was entitled to his opinion.

According to him, while some policies of the CBN may not have yielded the desired result, it is common place among Central Banks globally to tinker with policies.

“The election has not been won and lost so I feel the statement by Atiku should not trouble the CBN governor,” he added.
