The leader of Boko Haram faction, Jama’tu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS), Abubakar Shekau, is reportedly dead.

Reports emerged on Thursday that Shekau was killed in an attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a splinter group.

Recall that ISWAP fighters, led by its commander, Bana Duguri, reportedly stormed the Sambisa hideout of Boko Haram and unleashed mayhem on them.

The report claimed that Shekau blew up himself to avoid being captured alive.

However, ISWAP is yet to confirm this as expected as gains made in the power play. Should this be true, they are likely to make an announcement in the coming days.

Meanwhile, there have been several reports in the past, alleging the death of Shekau with the Nigerian government also claiming to have killed the terrorist leader but he kept resurfacing to discredit the claims.

Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists neighbour each other around the Lake Chad region and have reportedly clashed in the last few weeks.
