The Academic Staff Union of University, (ASUU) on Wednesday, suspended its nine-month-old strike.

ASUU started their strike in March 2020 and have been in several negotiations and meetings with the Federal Government to resolve the issues.

The National President of the Union, Biodun Ogunyemi, has now confirmed in an announcement, during a briefing of the union in Abuja on Wednesday that the strike has been called off.

Ogunyemi explained that the lecturers decided to call off the strike as they sympathised with students who were also their children, adding that “no amount of sacrifice would be too much to get the matter resolved as long as the government is consistent with its commitments.”

He therefore, warned that the union would return to strike without notice if the government fails in meeting its part of the agreement reached with the university lecturers.

He added that the reopening of the schools, considering the COVID-19 pandemic, lies with the Federal Government and Senate.

However, Ogunyemi did not give details of the agreement the lecturers had with the Federal Government when announcing the latest development.

Recall that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, assured Nigerians that the prolonged strike by the varsity lecturers would be called off before January 15.
