President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, decorated the new Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Farouk Yahaya.

The duo decorated Yahaya during the Federal Executive Council Meeting in State House, Abuja, in the presence of other officials.

Yahaya was appointed as the new COAS on May 27, 2021, barely six days after the former Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru, and 10 officers lost their lives in a plane crash in Abuja.

His decoration by the President comes a week after the House of Representatives confirmed his appointment as COAS.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, shared pictures of the event on Facebook with the caption, “President Buhari Decorates New Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya and presides over Federal Executive Council Meeting in State House on 7th July 2021”.

The new COAS had recently overseen the 2021 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).

At a church service on Sunday at St. Martin’s Military Catholic Church, Abakpa Military Cantonment, Enugu, the Army Chief lauded troops of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army for quelling insurrection and arson within the South-East.

However, the president urged the Army to change its counter-insurgency strategies to tackle the threats posed by terrorists, bandits and other criminal elements.
