Christian Pulisic came off the bench and inspired Chelsea to come from behind to beat Aston Villa on Sunday evening.

Kortney Hause had given Villa a first half lead, but the American was introduced and immediately had a hand in two goals that saw Frank Lampard’s side make ground on third place Leicester.

The win means fourth-placed Chelsea restored their five-point advantage over Manchester United and Wolves, who are fifth and sixth respectively.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone, one point from safety, after taking one point from their first two games back, following the resumption of the Premier League.

The suspension of the season had perhaps come at a frustrating time for Chelsea. They had just beaten Liverpool 2-0 in the FA Cup fifth round and then thrashed Everton 4-0 in the league.

But, 105 days on from that win against Carlos Ancelotti’s men, Chelsea looked fresh and motivated from the outset against a Villa side battling for survival.

The only notable concern, was their inability to turn chances into goals, particularly in the first half.

It was Chelsea’s first away win in the Premier League in 2020, the victory providing Lampard with cause for celebration on his 100th match as a manager.

The Blues had seen top-four rivals Manchester United, Sheffield United, Tottenham and Arsenal all drop points before they returned to action, and they now have a five-point cushion over United and Wolves with eight matches left to play.
