Presidential hopeful, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has called for a permanent end to the persistent industrial action by University lecturers.
Adebayo, in a statement today, said almost every Nigerian is affected by what he describes as a “reoccurring problem” in the educational sector.
Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities had earlier on Monday announced a “comprehensive and total strike”, noting that the Federal Government has failed to implement the Memorandum of Action signed in December 2020.
According to its President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the strike, which takes effect immediately, would last for an initial period of four weeks.
This is the fourth time in less than five years that university lecturers have suspended academic activities.
In reaction, Adebayo recalled how he lost three years in the university as a student in the 90s, adding that there is no longer integrity in the university curriculum.
While admitting that workers were right to demand their wages, he said the union and Federal Government must reach a compromise as the future of young Nigerians is at stake.
He, therefore, called on ASUU, universities and the government to seek a permanent solution.
The legal practitioner also urged the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, his Labour and Employment counterpart, Chris Ngige and other stakeholders to ensure that the strike is not prolonged.
He, however, pledged to monitor the situation and talk to all parties.
“We need to know that education is the cornerstone of civilisation and our future depends on it,” he said.
“We need to work hard to see that there is industrial harmony and educational quality for our children”.
