Nigeria’s positive coronavirus cases, on Wednesday, reached an all-time daily high of 34.

After an usual delay, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirmed its highest daily tally, four more than the previous day.

In a tweet, the NCDC revealed that Lagos and Kano States racked up a bulk of the numbers with 18 and 12 respectively.  The remainder was shared among Katsina (2), Niger (1) and Delta (1), taking the overall tally to 407.

The figures from the last two days is an astronomical rise from previous. While only five cases were recorded on Monday, there was a 500 per cent surge the following day. Wednesday’s numbers only affirms the inevitable; tougher days are ahead.

NCDC Director-General, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, on Wednesday, bragged about the agency’s capacity to test over 3000 Nigerians daily. With the proposed door-to-door testing set to commence, Nigerians could witness some shocking numbers.

On top of that, the rising number of fatality is worrying. The country suffered another death on Wednesday, completing its first dozen. A medical doctor, Emeka Chigbo is alleged to have been the victim.

According to reports,  Chigbo was a frontline doctor who contracted the virus while treating patients at the Infectious Disease Centre, Yaba, Lagos. His death pushes Nigeria’s fatality rate to around 2.5, averaging one loss in just a little over 40 cases.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom, however. Twenty-nine patients were discharged after recovering from the virus. Lagos freed 16, amongst them a Briton and Chinese nationals. Six patients recovered in Osun.
