Fasting is an act of abstinence from food, drink and sex. This must be carried out every day in the ninth month. The instructions are contained in Quran 2 vs 183. “O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you—as it was for those before you1—so perhaps you will become mindful of Allah”.
Purpose of fasting
We embark on this spiritual exercise to attain righteousness or God’s consciousness. To be God-conscious means drawing closer to Allah. This can be achieved by following the commandments of God.
Ramadan lessons
It makes us go through the experiences of destitute in society. Fasting will give us knowledge of the sufferings of these persons. Generosity and charity are encouraged during this period.
