Fasting is compulsory for all Muslims in the holy month. This spiritual exercise goes beyond abstinence from food, drink and sex. The aim should be to maximise the benefits of the month.

It is expected of all Muslims to finish the entire Quran during Ramadan. We are commanded to take a leave from our usual routine and study the holy book. We should also thoroughly recite, analyse and apply the Quran in our daily life as a letter carries 10 rewards.

Another duty of a Muslim during this period is remembrance of Allah. You can simply recite ‘Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Rahim’, signifying consciousness of Allah. You can also repeatedly say ‘taealaa allah’ or ‘alhamdulillah’. There is no time to waste this month.

We are strongly advised to study Islamic books. It is also recommended that we attend religious gatherings.

Charity is essential in this period too. Of all months, the Ramadan is that of generosity. Extend love and care to people around.
