Ebonyi Governor Umahi submits N122.8bn 2021 budget to State Assembly

‌Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi has presented a N122.8bn 2021 budget for 2021 to the State House of Assembly.

The budget which was christened Budget of “Stabilisation and Consolidation in a Recession”, was presented on Tuesday.

According to Umahi, federal allocations would account for the financing a large portion of the budget while other funds were expected from proceeds from sales of international market stores, land proceeds, sales of malls and other receipts.

Umahi also projected a 10.47 per cent increase in the state’s internally generated revenue which stood at N10.5bn in the 2020 budget to N12.8bn.

He said: “Our major revenue is expected to come from Federation Account estimated at about N52bn or 42.33 per cent of the budget. Other revenue heads like IGR, sales of international market stores, land proceeds, sales of malls, other receipts etc, will account for the balance of N57.994bn or 47.53 per cent of the total budget.

“We are projecting to increase our IGR from projected N10.5bn in the 2020 budget to N12.8bn or 10.47 per cent of our total expected revenue.”

Ebonyi State is in southeastern Nigeria. It is inhabited and populated primarily by the Igbo with the city of Abakaliki as its capital and largest city. Other major townships include Afikpo, Onueke, Ezzamgbo, Edda, Effium, Aba Omege, Amasiri, Unwana, Echara Ikwo, Egu-Ubia, Ụbụrụ, Onicha, etc.

It was one of the six states created in 1996 by the then federal military government of General Sani Abacha. The State of Ebonyi was created from parts of both Enugu State and Abia State, which were the Abakaliki division from Enugu State and the Afikpo division from Abia State respectively.

Ebonyi State has a total land mass measuring 5,538Km2 with majority of it being arable land that supports the growth of rice and tuber crops. It is a homogenous community with a population of about 3 million people. The economy of Ebonyi State is predominantly driven by the middle class.
