The Lagos State Assembly held an emergency plenary on Friday to address the ongoing #EndSARS protest in the state.

The protest, mostly led by youths, had started on Wednesday with the protesters seeking the dissolution of the SARS unit of the Nigeria Police Force over cases of brutality, harassment and extortion.

In continuation of the protest on Thursday, the youths, who besieged the State Assembly overnight, were eventually addressed by the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who gave assurance that their grievance will be addressed at the emergency Friday plenary.

The plenary had 15 representatives of the youths present, while the motion for the IG of Police to consider and listen to the cry of the protesters was moved by the Honourable representing Surulere Constituency, Desmond Elliot.

Elliot said the issue had gone beyong having reforms, that “the National Assembly, as the deputy Speaker rightly said, really needs to look into it. The IG of police should seriously consider that we are working for the people.”

“If the unit they set up is not working for the people and the people are calling for it to be disbanded, let’s do what they are saying.”

KaftanPost had earlier reported that the Lagos State deputy governor had addressed the protesters on Friday.

It can be recalled that the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police force was formed to tackle robbery and crimes related to armed robbery within the country.

It has been gathered that some members of the unit have breached its mode of operations across the nation through reported cases of harassment, extortion, brutality and even killing of young Nigerians.

Despite the statements of the Nigerian police that such acts contradict its responsibility to protect citizens and the issuance of sanctions to officers, cases of police brutality have continued over the years.
