Former Nigerian boxer and boxing coach Jerry Okorodudu has died.

The Olympian died at the age of 64 at a private hospital in Lagos late Wednesday night after being bed-ridden with illness for several weeks.

Okorodudu represented Nigeria at the 1984 Olympic Games and reached the quarter-finals of the middleweight boxing category.

He was one of the most skilful boxers of his era and the Korean fighter that defeated him at the Los Angeles Games, Shin Joo-Sup, went on to win the middleweight gold medal.

Okorodudu turned professional after the Olympics and had 21 bouts with a decent record.

One of the most notable fights of his career was the knockout defeat to fellow Nigerian Joe Lasisi in which Okorodudu claimed that his opponent used black magic to beat him.

He went on to become a boxing coach after his pro career and was one of the most vocal sporting figures in the country, oftentimes decrying maladministration and calling for reforms.

Okorodudu had undergone a successful surgery for a previous illness before his ultimately terminal battle with foot ulcer.
