The Federal Government has granted an approval to the Nigerian Customs Service for the reopening of four additional land borders in the country.

This was contained in a circular released on Friday and signed by Deputy Comptroller – General E Edorhe in which it mentioned the borders to include Idi Iroko in Ogun State, Jibiya border in Katsina State,Kamba border in Kebbi and Ikom border post in Cross River State.

Earlier on the 16th of December,2021,the Presidency had granted the opening of Mfum,Seme,Ilela and Maigatari borders.

The circular further directed all customs formations and Joint Border Patrols (JBTs) to comply with the directives.

Recall that in August 2019, Nigeria closed its land borders with neighbouring Benin, Cameroon, Chad and Niger. While people were allowed to pass through, the movement of goods was blocked.

According to the government, the objective was to stem the smuggling of goods, particularly rice.
