FG warned against resurgence of Ebola virus

The Federal Government has been warned and notified of the resurgence of the deadly Ebola virus in Guinea.

This was made known in a letter titled “Re: Resurgence of the deadly Ebola in Guinea” from the Ministry of Health and signed by the Director of Health Planning, Research and Statistics for the Minister of Health, Dr Ngozi Azodoh, on Monday.

It warned that the virus could spread to other West African countries and Nigeria if precautionary measures are not taken to contain it.

The letter reads: “The Ministry is in receipt of a letter from Ministry of Foreign Affairs with ref number CW8/3/XXIII informing Nigeria of a recent outbreak and resurgence of the deadly virus of Ebola virus in Guinea – Conakry which had devastated devastated the country in the past.

“In view of the above, the Liberian government has requested the Nigerian authorities to take necessary measures to avoid further spread of the deadly virus

“While the relevant technical department /agencies are working on the national response and instituting appropriate measures, you are to also be mindful of this outbreak and its implications to the West Africa (WA) subregion and be guided accordingly.”

It would be recalled that a total of 28,616 cases of EVD and 11,310 deaths were reported in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone before the virus was partially defeated.

In Nigeria, cases of the Ebola virus disease were reported in 2014 as a small part of the epidemic that originated in Guinea. A total of 20 cases were confirmed according to reports, with eight deaths.
