Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick, has declared that he will not be going for another four-year term.
Pinnick was first elected in 2014 again and won re-election in 2018, making him one of the longest-serving NFF presidents in recent years.
There had been reports that he was keen on a third term, especially after working his way into the FIFA Council, the highest decision-making organ of the global football body.
However, there have been calls for him and his board to resign since late March after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The 51-year-old Delta State-born administrator appears to have caved in to public pressure, although he cites family concerns as his reason for not seeking another term despite being eligible.
“Am I eligible to run? Yes, I’m eligible to run based on our statutes. Do I want to run? At this moment, it’s a no no. Because my family says so at the moment,” Pinnick said on Friday.
“My family is very key to me and they say I’ve put in my all, I’ve done my best. They say that it’s taken a toll on me, it’s taken a toll on the family and they believe that it’s time that I should move on.”
Still, Pinnick hinted that it was not a decision he was happy to make, saying:
“It’s a very regrettable decision.”
The NFF elections are due to be held later in 2022.
