An Abuja Grade I Area Court sitting in Lugbe on Thursday, sentenced a 29-year-old Labourer, Abraham Donatus, to ten months imprisonment for stealing and destroying government property.

The Judge, Sadiq Abubakar, sentenced Donatus, after he pleaded guilty to theft and mischief.

Abubakar did not give the convict an option to pay a fine.

He warned the convict to be of good behaviour and to desist from committing crimes after serving his punishment.

Abubakar added that the punishment would serve as a deterrent to others.

Donatus begged the court for leniency.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Mrs Ijeoma Ukagha, told the court that one Mbadugha Augustine,  reported the matter at the  Iddo Police Station on March 4.

Ukagha told the court that the convict committed the offence on March, 4, at about 3 a.m.

The prosecutor said the convict criminally and dishonestly destroyed government street light at Kuje junction Airport road Abuja and stole away the cables

She said the complainant caught Donatus at Kuje junction, Airport road Abuja and handed him over to the police.

He said that during police investigation, the convict could not give a satisfactory account of his action.

The offence, she said, contravened the provisions of Section 327 of the Penal code.
