The Lagos State Government has debunked as fake rumours and information making the rounds that some members of its staff have tested positive to the dreaded coronavirus.

In his Twitter handle, the Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akoshile, refuted the news item, describing it as fake.

Responding to further enquiries from KAFTAN Television, Lagos State government House correspondent, Akoshile, simply said; “Which breaking news, something we have debunked since yesterday?”

It would be recalled that an online media, published a story on May 5, 2020, that 14 members of staff of the Lagos State government House had tested positive to Covid-19.

However, an insider source who does not want to be quoted, told KAFTANPost in confidence, that the story of the infection is true and that the Chief Press Secretary was even among the Government House staff, who were tested but luckily his result turned out negative.

Akoshile, though, cautioned the media to be mindful of what they push out to the public, at a time when all hands are on deck for action against the ravaging Covid-19.

The official position of Lagos State Government is very clear that this supposed mass infection of 14 staff at the Government House did not happen, as shown in the message put out by both the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor and the State Commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotosho. Mr Omotosho advised the general public that the story is fake and should be ignored.

All officials of the Government that KaftanPost reporter also spoke with, including the information officer who posted the official government rebuttal on the Government House platform, corroborated the assertion of the Chief Press Secretary, saying; “since Mr Akosile has said the story is not true, that means it is false. “

As what some of the officials say anonymously is at variance with the official position, KaftanPost reporter has observed that there is an atmosphere of thinly disguised anxiety amongst some staff showing concerns over workplace Covid-19 infection. There is no atmosphere of frantic decontamination or panic amongst the staff to suggest mass infection but some staff got concerned enough to undergo Covid-19 tests.

KaftanPost will continue the investigation of the claim to ensure that the truth comes out beyond merely relying on official denial or anonymous confirmation by unnamed staff. Looking around the Government House premises, there is yet no evidence to suggest that any official step or visible action is being taken to suppress or cover-up an actual occurrence. Investigation continues.
