The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday night said the country recorded 48 new coronavirus cases.

However, the centre noted that the report did not include Lagos, which is experiencing a surge in infection.

No reason was given for this but our findings reveal that the move is to douse the tension around the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Recall that the school management on Wednesday said hostels were shut down to prevent “escalation” of coronavirus cases in the institution.

The University also confirmed that “some students tested positive for COVID-19”.

It, however, noted that the affected students have been isolated after contact tracing.

“In addition, the COVID-19 vaccination was made available to the staff and students through the support of the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council. Lately, some students have tested positive,” a statement by the school read.

“These students have been sent to the appropriate designated facilities in the State and contact-tracing has enabled us to identify those who have had exposure and directed them to isolate”.

Lagos recorded over 100 cases twice in the last two days with the bulk from the institution.

Without the country’s epicentre, the fresh infections were recorded in Ondo (14), Oyo (10), Gombe (6), FCT (5) and Ogun (4).

Others are Delta, Ekiti and Rivers with three apiece.

Nigeria’s total positive cases is currently at 168,916 albeit only 4,263 are active.

No death was recorded in the last 24 hours, the NCDC added as the fatality figure remained 2,125.
