The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum, Aminu Tambuwal, has revealed that Nigeria cannot succeed in its efforts to have the country restructured without the National Assembly.

The Sokoto State Governor made this assertion through his Special Adviser on Public Affairs, Abubakar Shekara, during the plenary session of the 26th Nigerian Economic hub Summit tagged, ‘Building partnerships for resilience,’ in Abuja on Monday.

Noting that the country made a mistake in 2015 by rejecting efforts by the House of Representatives to amend the constitution, Tambuwal stressed that the National Assembly will play a major role in achieving the desired restructuring.

Tambuwal, who was Speaker of the House of Representatives during the attempt to amend the constitution in 2015, said, “As it were at the moment, whatever you are going to do about the constitution, has been prescribed by the constitution, how you are going to do it.”

He explained that the constitutional conferences during the Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan administrations failed because their resolutions were not translated into legislation.

He added that “So, you cannot go outside of the constitution to amend the constitution, so we better come to terms with this realisation and agree to come together to achieve what the nation desires.”

The Summit is organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group and the Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning with the aim of ensuring sustainable partnership between the public and private sector in upholding the economy at all levels.

“It has become apparent that the level of investments in the youth will determine the pace of economic growth, development, and security of the nation.

“Governments at all levels, especially the sub-nationals and all stakeholders need to refocus youth development programmes from mere prescriptive employment drives to improve the wealth creation capabilities of the youth and find ways to ensure that empowerment policies and programmes adopt a broader and more holistic framework.” the organizers said earlier.

Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, who conveyed the message of the President, Muhammadu Buhari virtually, commended the organizers for putting up such a Summit to enhance economic growth.

He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught a lesson that “Partnerships are essentials for credible responses with lasting effects.

Also fielding questions from participants, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State who doubles as the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, assures that there will be a better partnership with the Federal Government in ensuring a better economic growth.
