For the third time in barely eight months, Governors of the Northeast converged in Yola, Adamawa State for a meeting, with insurgency and kidnapping topping the list on their agenda.

This follows the formation of the North East Governors Forum in March.

The speech by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri at the opening ceremony of the forum centered on issues that set the region back, including kidnapping and insurgency as he called on his colleagues to act appropriately.

He also noted that the camps currently occupied by internally displaced persons (IDPs) has to be emptied through an intensified fight against insurgency.

According to him, their bid to end insurgency and kidnapping in the region will only be possible by a collaborative effort to ensure that farmers work without fear of being kidnapped.

“There is so much we can achieve if we work together,” Fintiri concluded.

In his remark Governor of Borno State and Chairman of the North East Governor’s Forum, Babagana Zulum identified insecurity as the most alarming common concern in the region.

“The most worrisome challenge confronting us remains the daunting issue of insecurity which has been causing excruciating loss of lives and property in the subregion.

“And the most devastating security challenge is the seemingly unending Boko Haram phenomenon which has a destructive effect on the socio-economic life of our people and which has inevitably displaced hundreds of thousands of people from across the North East,” Governor Zulum said.

Governors Bala Mohammed and Inuwa Yahaya of Bauchi and Gombe States respectively were in attendance.
