Swedish cartoonist, Lars Vilks, who made a caricature of Prophet Mohammed’s picture in 2007, has died in a car accident.
Vilks was 75 years old.
He died in Sweden. He was killed in a car crash along with two police officers who were in the car with him. The car was reported to have collided with an oncoming truck on Sunday.
According to the Police report, the car accident is being investigated although it doesn’t appear to have foul play involved.
The spokesperson said, “This is being investigated like any other road accident. Because two policemen were involved, an investigation has been assigned to a special section of the prosecutor’s office.”
According to the reports, the accident occurred near the small town Markaryd when the car Vilks was travelling in crashed into an oncoming truck. Both vehicles caught fire.
The truck driver survived but is currently hospitalized.
Vilks has been heavily guarded since he made a cartoon of Prophet Mohammed’s head on a dog’s body in 2007, prompting several death threats and reactions from the muslim who felt that was offensive.
He previously survived an attack on him at a free-speech conference in Copenhagen in 2015. This attack however killed a Danish film director.
Al-Qaeda offered a $100,000 reward for Vilks’ murder.
Sweden’s prime minister then, Fredrik Reinfeldt, met with ambassadors from several Muslim countries to ease tensions concerning the act from Vilks.
