Seun Egbegbe regains freedom after five years over fraud

Filmmaker Olajide Kareem aka Seun Egbegbe, has regained his freedom after spending five years and eight months in Ikoyi Prison.

He was arrested and convicted over fraud in 2017 before Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo. He was accused of scamming about 30 bureau de change operators between 2015 and 2017. He was also allegedly accused of stealing some Iphones.

Egbegbe stood trial alongside with Oyekan Ayomide, Olalekan Yusuf, Lawal Kareem and Muyideen Shoyombo.

According to Police reports, he had made it with the total sum of N39,098,100, $90,000 and £12,550.

The prosecuting counsel for the police, Innocent Anyigor, said Egbegbe and the other defendants acted contrary to Section 8 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and were liable to be punished under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

His first court proceeding was in February 2017 however on October 11, a Federal High Court found the filmmaker guilty of one out of 44 charges laid against him.

The court dropped other 43 charges over lack of concrete evidence.

It was also reported that the Police tampered with the money recovered.
