Plastic surgery is a surgical operation to reconstruct, regenerate or alter the human body. It has been performed for centuries.

It was first performed by surgeon Harold Gillies, who made reconstructive facial surgery in 1917. And since then, people have picked on the wave of plastic surgery. However, it didn’t become popular until some decades ago with the likes of E! Series Botched and Dr 90210.

Plastic surgery can either be reconstructive or cosmetic surgery. A reconstructive Plastic surgery is a medical operation majorly to improve dysfunctional body parts due to accident or birth default.

While cosmetic surgery is for individuals who want to change a certain part of their body to achieve a perfect body.

But is there an end to a perfect body? Why do people go for it even when they are not oblivious to the risks associated with it?

The truth of the matter is: there is always that body part we desperately wish to change, that part of the body either hidden or visible to the world. It could be a part you have been constantly bullied or body shamed for. This is where self esteem comes in.

Many opt for cosmetic surgery to boost their level of confidence. An international reality TV star, Khloe Kardashian, has indirectly spoken about the reason for a change in body size. Khloe, who claimed to have been constantly bullied for being the fat sister, decided to do something about it. Although she claimed it’s all exercise, many still believe it’s more of a cosmetic makeover.

Another thing is the kind of exposure and work you find yourself. As an entertainer, you are at the forefront of criticism. You are expected to be seen without flaws, especially physical flaws. Some are driven to look perfect to achieve a good rating for their company. This is often seen in the international music industry, 90% of female singers are rumoured to have gone under the knife.

Abuse is another thing to bring up cosmetic surgery ideas. It messes with your mental health and you begin to have crazy ideas to reconstruct your broken body. A known rapper, Lil Kim, revealed in interviews the reason for some of her cosmetic surgeries. According to her, she was in an abusive relationship where physical altercations had occurred leading to multiple injuries like her broken nose. And in order to remain in the business, she opted for more surgeries.

Another known reason which many claim is ‘Choice’. Female rapper, Cardi B, was rumoured to have gone through a series of cosmetic surgeries especially after the birth of her daughter. ‘I do what I want with my body’, she said.

Common types of Plastic surgeries
Cosmetic surgery is a diverse procedure with over 30 surgeries.
Rhinoplasty is an operation to fix a broken nose or large nose, Mentoplasty is for the chin, while Otoplasty is for the ears.

Liposuction
This is a common and painless cosmetic surgery. It is also known as lipoplasty. The body is recontoured by removing excess fat stored directly under the skin of wherever you want it. You will be placed on a local anaesthetic and in some cases, the fat is being transferred to another area of the body.

Body contouring
This is where the tucking and lifting comes in. It can be seen in cases like skin tightening, breast lift also known as Mastoplasty, arm lift to remove fat either from excess weight loss or weight gain, tightening of the abdomen, waist, hips and outer thighs. You can also lift your brows, general facelift called Rhytidectomy and eyelids.

Augmentation
Another common cosmetic procedure is augmentation. This operation is what many consider to be the real ‘going under the knife’
Unlike most surgeries, an implant is introduced in this particular one. It could be for a bigger breast, lip filling, face or abs.

Butt implant is the most dangerous cosmetic surgery in the world and although there are so many of them, it is the most dangerous of all.

A famous surgeon, Dr Dubrow of BOTCHED, in a live interview mentioned the risk of a butt fat transfer. According to him, a blood clot can easily escape during the process of pumping in fat, then travels to the arteries and that’s the end.

Many have opted for the fat transfer because it seems like the easiest compared to implants. However, there is also a great possibility of death right on the operating table.

Notable celebrities who have been accused of plastic surgery are: Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Cardi B, Khloe Kardashian, Erica Mena, Saweeti, and many others.

Although many are still silent about the issue, some of these celebrities have admitted to these procedures. Female rapper, Cardi B, had breast enlargement and butt implant procedures before her fame and in 2019, people noticed her reconstructed body in a revealing outfit, making her spill the beans about liposuction, and more breast augmentation operations. Many have also worried about how her face changes with a different look.

In Nigeria, the rise of plastic surgeries is beginning to challenge every lady close to a perfect body. People are beginning to question the need for so many recent Kim Kardashians amongs us without having a visa.

Some known celebrities actually confessed to altering their body, while some are still mute about it.

Contrary to the belief that Plastic surgery is just rising in Nigeria, it has been in the country for years, but with the on and off scandals of a popular surgeon, Dr Anu, people are beginning to have a knowledge of what it really means and if they can actually consider it.

These procedures are expensive, yet many ladies in the country are considering it or have already considered it. There are several clinics in popular cities like Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, Ibadan and many others.

Clinics like the Grandvillemedlaser and Dr. Amaka Ehighibe of body360withdr.e is very popular on Instagram and this is to show that the procedure is widely accepted.

According to Dr Amaka, body contouring usually occurs after a patient who went through a massive weight loss ends up with loose skin that needs to be tightened. She said people end up with scars but they are strategically placed in places known to the patients and the operation is in three sections.
