Nigeria has been set in a celebration mood as Ese Brume became the first to win a medal (bronze) at the ongoing Olympics in Tokyo.

This brings her to the spotlight as one of Nigeria’s current finest athletes.

Here are five other things you may need to know about Ese Brume:

*One of Nigeria’s youngest and successful athletes*

Born 20 January 1996, 25-year-old Ese might not be the youngest Athletes but only a few at her age can boast of her successes, having won the first medal at the Olympics and holds the African junior record in her constituent.

*African Junior long jump record holder*

She is the African junior record holder in the event and also a five-time African junior champion in athletics. She won five gold medals at the African Junior Championship from 2013 to 2015 in both long jump, triple jump and relay.

*Broke Chioma Ajunwa’s 25-year record*

Brume, at the Chula Vista Festival, shattered Chioma Ajunwa’s African and Nigerian record, which has stood unchallenged for the last 25 years.

She leaped a distance of 7.17m to effectively bury Ajunwa’s 7.12m record which was good enough at that time for a gold medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

*Started winning at age 16*

Ese’s journey to becoming an African and World Champion began nine years ago, at age 16 when she first emerged at national level at the 2012 Nigerian Athletics Championships with former junior athletes, Dakolo Emmanuel and Fabian Edoki. She placed sixth in the long jump, clearing over six meters.

*The Brume’s rock*

Ese Brume is not the only athlete and successful one in the Brume-lineage as her younger brother is also flying the family’s name high.

In 2021, Okeoghene Brume broke the African U-18 100 meter record with 10.13s.
