Funke Oshonaike has been recognised for her remarkable staying power in Olympics competition.

The Nigerian table tennis legend has attended the Olympics Games a record seven times, making her the first African woman to achieve the feat.

The 45-year-old was on Monday inducted into the prestigious 7th Club by the International Table Tennis Federation in Tokyo, Japan, where she just announced her retirement from the Olympics.

She becomes the first woman in history to be inducted into the club, which is for players who have participated in seven editions of the Olympics.

Oshonaike joins Segun Toriola as the only Nigerians in the club.

Toriola was inducted at the Rio 2016 Olympics, his seventh event.

Oshonaike first attended the Olympics as a teenager in 1996 in Atlanta and she has been at every edition since (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, Rio 2016 and now Tokyo 2020).

The legendary player, who has won 11 medals at the African Games, bowed out of the Olympics on Saturday after losing her women’s singles match to Juan Liu of the United States of America.

She declared that Tokyo would be her last Olympics, passing up the chance to feature at Paris 2024.
