W’Cup: Senegal emerges first African nation to reach last 16

Senegal have emerged as the first African nation to reach the round of 16 at the World Cup in Qatar following a 2-1 victory over Ecuador at the Khalifa International Stadium on Tuesday.

The Teranga Lions earned six point after Tuesday’s win which was a boost to their 3-1 victory over hosts, Qatar in the second Group A game.

Watford forward Ismaïla Sarr put Senegal in the lead just before halftime.

Moisés Caicedo brought Ecuador back to the game in the 67th minute.

However, Kalidou Koulibaly inspired a brilliant winner for the Lions of Teranga, three minutes later much to the delight of the Senegalese fans.

It is the first time that Senegal have claimed back-to-back World Cup victories.
