The police in Kano have arrested the state Deputy Governor, Nasir Gawuna, over alleged disruption in the announcement of the result of last Saturday governorship election in which the candidate of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is in the lead.

With results in 43 of 44 Local Government Areas in the state declared, the PDP is leading by a margin of 16,080 votes. The result so far indicates that the PDP scored 951,531 votes, while the APC has 935,451 votes.

With only one local government left, the PDP is comfortably leading with a margin of 16,080 votes. The APC is leading in the number of local governments while the PDP is leading in the figures.

While the result in the only local government area still being expected, Nasarawa was being collated, the deputy governor in the company with others including the commissioner for …. allegedly stormed the venue of the collation exercise and disrupted proceedings.

This prompted some supporters of the PDP to stage a counter move which led to a halt in the announcement of results at the centre.

Meanwhile, INEC has adjourned collation of Kano governorship and state assembly election results for a short while. Kano governorship election Presiding Officer Prof. B.B. Shehu together with the Resident Electoral Commissioner Prof. Riskuwa Shehu announced the decision at about 1:30am.

Arrested, alongside Gawuna, is the Commissioner in charger of local government and chieftaincy affairs, Sule Garo.

However, the police are expected to later release Mr. Gawuna without charges as he enjoys constitutional immunity from prosecution based on the office he holds.
