Nigeria has recorded 248 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 4,399.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) made this known via its Twitter handle

It also said that no fewer than 143 patients have died from coronavirus-related complications in the country.

NCDC said, “On the 10th of May 2020, 248 new confirmed cases and 17 deaths were recorded in Nigeria.

“No new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours.

“Till date, 4399 cases have been confirmed, 778 cases have been discharged and 143 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The 248 new cases are reported from 17 states- Lagos(81), Jigawa(35), Borno(26), Kano(26), Bauchi(20),FCT(13), Edo(12), Sokoto(10), Zamfara(7), Kwara(4), Kebbi(4), Gombe(2), Taraba(2), Ogun(2), Ekiti (2), Osun(1), Bayelsa(1).”

In a related story, Jigawa State government earlier on Sunday, announced that out of the 35 new cases, 18 are almajiris repatriated from Kano while the remaining 17 patients are contacts of infected persons in the state.

Mr Zakari said the total COVID-19 cases in the state increased to 116 with 60 of them being almajiris who returned from Kano.

Meanwhile, as coronavirus cases rise, Bauchi State government on Sunday declared total lockdown of the three local government areas bordering Kano State.

Governor Bala Muhammed took this step after Bauchi recorded 66 new cases of COVID-19 in less than 24 hours. A total of 44 of the cases were announced Saturday night by the NCDC while the state government confirmed 20 new cases on Sunday.

Bauchi now has 183 cases, the fourth highest coronavirus cases in Nigeria.

The governor said a large number of the new cases come from Katagum, a local government that shares boundaries with communities in Kano State.

The governor said it has become worrisome that 69 of the 183 cases in Bauchi were recorded in Azare and environs, in Katagum local government.

He blamed the situation in the area on the “influx of people from Kano State.”

Governor Mohammed said Katagum, Giade and Zaki local government areas would be shut down completely for the 10 days to allow health officials carry out contact tracing while security officials will seal off all identified routes linking the state with its neighbouring states.
