The 93rd Academy Awards was held on Sunday, April 25, 2021, after being on hold for two months.

The show was broadcast from two locations in Los Angeles: The Dolby Theatre and Union Station. Once again, there was no host for the ceremony, however there were Pre-show hosts: Ariana DeBose Lil Rel and Howery.

The movie “Nomadland” took the most wins with three awards and “Mank”, “Sound of Metal”, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Father” taking at least two wins each.

Two women were nominated for best director for the first time, Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson. The hair and makeup team behind “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” became the first Black stylists in Oscars history to win for best makeup and hairstyling.

Biggest winners

  1.  Black or white
The Academy Award known for its devious selection of nominees surprised everyone by not making the same mistake this time. The category was not all white, there were some black nominations and they even won an award for the “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”.
  2.  A new wave for gender equity
Another win for the night was the female directors in the nomination, they became the first female directors to be nominated at the Oscars.
  3.  Netflix achievements
Netflix also made the list of winners as not only one, but an amazing number of 35 nominations. Netflix’s growth in the nominations count has been nothing but confounding to say the least.

Their films had just one nomination for three years (2013- 2015). But in 2020, it began its staggering success with The Irishman and Marriage Story, rising to 24 nominations.

So it came as no surprise when it blew past that number to 35 nominations this year, led by its Best Picture nominees Mank (10 nominations, the most nods earned by a single film this year) and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (six nominations).

The only two categories Netflix wasn’t nominated in this year are Best International Feature and Best Live Action Short Film.

Biggest losers

  1. Inequity with nomination
A loser however, was “Da 5 Bloods” which was strangely snubbed by the Academy, earning just one nomination at the Best Original score.
  2. Off-track interest
Another oops moment was the date that was postponed. The date was pushed back for two months, giving time to slack off and stop voting. It was supposed to be February 28 but got pushed to April 25.
  3. Modest Luck

The movie, “Mank”, was nominated ten times but got lucky with just two awards: Cinematography and Production Design.
