The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Portuguese manager, Jose Peseiro, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

This is after he was endorsed in a proposal by the NFF Technical and Development sub-committee.

His appointment follows the sacking of Gernot Rohr earlier this month.

The executive committee of the NFF has, however, resolved that the interim head coach, Augustine Eguavoen, will be in charge of the three-time African champions for the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon while coach Peseiro will serve as an observer.

The NFF said the tournament will be a good avenue for Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as technical director of the NFF after the AFCON.

“After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end to the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr,” the NFF said in a communique.

“However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer.

“It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON.”

Peseiro, 61, has worked with over 15 clubs and two national teams in his 30-year-old coaching career.

He has coached the Saudi Arabia and Venezuela national teams, quitting the latter in September after being owed several months in wages.

He has been head coach of clubs across the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa, leading clubs like Sporting Lisbon, Porto and Braga in his native Portugal, Rapid Bucharest in Romania, Panathinaikos in Greece, Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia and Al Ahly in Egypt.

He won the Egyptian Premier League with Al Ahly in 2016, the Portuguese Cup with Braga in 2013 and reached the UEFA Cup final with Sporting in 2005.

The 61-year-old was also in charge of the Venezuela national team until August and has also coached Sporting Lisbon, FC Porto, and Al Ahly of Egypt.

Meanwhile, the executive committee has mandated the Technical and Development Committee and the NFF secretariat to organise a friendly match for the Super Eagles when the team arrives in Garoua for the AFCON 2021.

They have also been mandated to arrange matches for the Super Eagles and the Super Falcons in the upcoming FIFA windows.
