Nigeria’s daily COVID-19 infections have fallen below 700 for the fifth consecutive day, the first time since the beginning of 2021.

On Tuesday, Nigeria recorded 571 new cases, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The country had on Monday announced 542 fresh cases and 521, 24 hours earlier – its lowest daily tally this year.

The reduction in cases occurs after weeks of relatively high figures when Nigeria recorded an average of over 1,000 daily cases since the second wave of the pandemic began in the country in December.

The total coronavirus infections recorded in Nigeria is now 153,187, the NCDC said.

Meanwhile, the death toll is still on the rise with 12 fatalities in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 1,874.

The NCDC also confirmed the discharge of 286 patients from Lagos, FCT and Benue State as total recovery jumped to 129,943.
