Ondo State has confirmed its coronavirus index case (COVID-19), around five weeks after the first case of the disease in Nigeria was identified.

The state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, announced this via his verified Twitter handle on Friday.

He stated that the state government obtained the study from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

In a series of tweets, the Governor explained that “the index case is a military officer who was a returnee from India. He has been in isolation since he returned and has been monitored by the medical team of the Military and our state team throughout this period.

“Upon showing some symptoms, his samples were taken and the diagnosis confirmed by @NCDCgov at their lab in Ede. We have now commenced the transfer of the officer to the state isolation center”, the governor added.

Governor Akeredolu noted further that the infected case had been put in isolation and would be properly monitored.

He urged residents of Ondo state to remain calm, adding that the government has started tracing the patient’s contacts.

Ondo Records First Index Case

It is with great concern that the Ondo State Government announces the first index case. A suspected case tested positive to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We thank God for His protection thus far. Ours has been a case of anxiety while we enjoyed a COVID-19 free State status. This development has, however, repudiated that enviable status even as we urge all to be vigilant and keep ourselves within the princints of measures put in place.

God help Ondo State

Donald Ojogo
Hon. Commissioner for Information and Orientation
