Fresh cracks have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as indications point to possible defections by some of its most prominent members, including Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, and senior figures from the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).
KAFTAN News gathered that former Senator Effiong Bob, a long-serving PDP stalwart who represented Akwa Ibom North Central in the Senate between 2007 and 2011, is set to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Bob, a former chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, is reportedly frustrated by ongoing internal conflicts within the PDP, particularly the unresolved leadership tussle over the National Secretary position.
A source close to the former senator confirmed the move, citing the PDP’s failure to address critical structural issues ahead of the 2027 elections as a major factor.
“We cannot afford the Zamfara mistake,” the source noted, referring to the 2019 election disaster where the APC lost all elective positions in Zamfara due to flawed primaries.
The potential exit of Senator Bob could set off a domino effect of defections from the party in Akwa Ibom, echoing the recent mass departure of PDP members in Delta State.
Governor Umo Eno’s Political Future in Focus
Speculation is also mounting around the political future of Governor Umo Eno, who is believed to be in quiet consultations about joining the APC. Sources say the governor is awaiting alignment with his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, before making any official announcement.
Governor Eno’s recent gestures of support toward President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio have only added fuel to the rumours.
PDP Youth Leader Reacts: “Let Them Go”
Reacting to the wave of potential defections, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Comrade Timothy Osadolor, expressed little concern, stating the party is better off without disloyal elements.
“Any BoT member, governor, or senator planning to defect should do so now. If it’s transport fare they lack, they should come to Wadata Plaza — we’ll assist them,” Osadolor said.
He described the defectors as individuals who once benefited immensely from the PDP but are now working against it from within.
Osadolor emphasized that political success is built on genuine grassroots support, not just high-profile names, citing the APC’s 2023 performance as evidence.
“The people will judge their actions. History will decide whether their defection is driven by principle or political opportunism,” he said.
With key political players in Akwa Ibom on the verge of switching allegiance, the PDP faces yet another test of unity and resilience as Nigeria approaches another electoral season.
