A habit is something we do daily. It can be positive or negative. The latter is called a bad habit. Smoking, drinking, disrespectfulness and others fall under this category. These habits are learnt from parent, siblings, peers and friends. Some come naturally though.

In psychology, it is being said that changing one’s bad habits is very difficult. It takes time to learn an addiction and many years to unlearn it.

However, Ramadan is an opportunity to make those changes we desire. Interestingly, psychologist opined that it will take 30 days to learn a habit, same period of the holy month. Ramadan is a time to retrain, refrain and readjust our lifestyle.

Here are proven techniques to help us adjust our bad habits this Ramadan:

1 – Identity and acknowledge all the bad habits

2 – Make your intention known

3 – Pick a habit for a day

4 – Realise that change begins with you

5 – Avoid self-condemnation

6 – Replace bad habits with good ones

7 – Change your environment

8 – Engage in physical and spiritual exercises

9 –  Always reward yourself

10 – Schedule and limit bad habits

11 – Share your progress with people

12 – Continue after Ramadan

13 – Remind yourself of death and the life after

14 – Develop a strategy to contain the bad habit if it resurfaces
