A former governor of old Sokoto State, Garba Nadama, has died at the age of 82.

He died on Monday night after a sudden illness amid rising cases of Coronavirus disease though the Nigeria centre for Disease Control did not report any positive test from the Sokoto state on Monday.

According to a Press statement issued by Sokoto State government, Nadama died at age 82 after “an illness of natural cause”.

The statement said Governor Aminu Tambuwal expressed shock and sadness over Nadama’s death and sympathised with the family of the late politician who passed away on Monday.

The Governor described the late governor as “a dedicated statesman and visionary whose ideas positioned the state on a solid foundation”.

The governor said during his lifetime, “the deceased was unrelenting in offering wise counsel for the advancement of the state and its people”.

Nadama, a Ph.D holder in History from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, served as governor of the old Sokoto state from November 1981 to December 1983, following the death of the governor, Shehu Kangiwa in an equestrian accident.

He was elected governor in 1983 on the platform of the defunct National Party of Nigeria, NPN.

Family sources said the burial arrangement would be announced soon.
