The Inspector General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, has ordered the immediate investigation of an alleged suit challenging the legality of the States’ Judicial Panel of Inquiry, investigating allegations by citizens against officers of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, on 3rd December, 2020 in Abuja.

The statement revealed that the order given by the IGP has become necessary as a result of the reports making the rounds that about a legal suit challenging the ongoing Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police brutality across all States.

A Judicial Panel of Inquiry was constituted following the nationwide protest against the brutality of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in October.

According to the statement, the IGP “expressed the disapproval of the Force Management Team on the matter and ordered investigations into the alleged role of the Force Legal Section including its Head.

“Meanwhile, the Force Legal Officer has been queried and may face further sanctions if found guilty of dereliction of duty,” the statement reads.

The IGP therefore stressed the commitment of the Force to fulfilling all its obligations with regards to the disbandment of the defunct SARS.

The FG has since pronounced the ban of SARs across the country, hinting that there would be a new security formation, named Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT).
