A former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Abia State.

Lt. Gen Azubuike, who served as Chief of Army Staff for four years under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and handed over to the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Ibrahim Buratai, joined the APC in his Ovim Ward in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia North Senatorial District, where he hails from.

He was received into the Party by the Abia APC National Membership Registration and Revalidation Committee-led by Ambassador Bala Mohammed Maigairi and members, the leader of the State Party caucus and Senate Majority Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu; Party State Chairman, Hon Donald Nwankpa; members of State Working Committee, SWC, Ward/LGA party executive members, House of Representatives, Chief Whip, Hon Nkeriuka Onyejiocha; Rep Ben Kalu, State APC lawmakers, associates of the ex-Army Chief of Staff and other notable dignitaries.

This is happening after speculations in many quarters of the state that the former army chief had concluded plans to vie for the governorship seat of Abia State in 2023 general elections.

Disclosing his reasons for joining the APC, Ihejirika said that he’s coming into politics by joining the APC is to contribute to the progress of the party at the state and national level.

He added that having served in the army for almost 38 years, he has gathered sufficient experience to contribute to the democracy of the nation and the fortunes of the party.

“Having served almost 38 years in the military, I am convinced that it will be a waste of experience for me to remain outside government activities.

“This is because I have a lot to offer and assure you all that I will operate an open-door policy, I will also learn fast.”
