Veteran journalist, Raheemat Omoro Momodu, has died after she slumped at a meeting on Tuesday, June 14, 2022.
She was the former president of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and also until her death the Head of Human Security and Civil Society of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The news of her death was released by another journalist, Joke Kulenya, on Facebook. According to the report, the deceased was in a meeting and she had slumped and died before she could get to the hospital.
She wrote, “For me, the question is ‘what happened to Raheemat Momodu? An ever-smiley vibrant lady, a core professional. Goodbye pleasant soul.
“These deaths are just becoming too much on us in the media industry. At the weekend, it was columnist, #Michael #Awe aka #Michael #West. We’re barely over shedding tears on his sudden exit; now this.
“According to her former editor, she was attending a meeting, slumped and didn’t make it alive to the hospital at about 2.00pm today (Tuesday). Just like that, Raheemat Momodu is no more.”
The deceased will be buried today, Wednesday, June 15, according to muslim tradition.
Some of her colleagues have reacted to the news and have released a statement to pay their respect to the late Raheemat.
The statement read, “It is with a searing pain that we announce the death of a treasured friend, Hajia Raheemat Omoro Momodu, who for over three decades has been for all of us more than just another friend,
“Raheemat passed away on Tuesday, 14 June 2022, in Abuja. She will be buried Wednesday, 15 June, 2022 at the Gwarimpa Cemetery, opposite War College after prayers for the repose of her soul at the National Mosque, Abuja by 1pm.
“… dynamic leadership of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists in the 1990s as the chairperson during which she became a vital ally in the establishment of the New Trend Movement in the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).”
