The Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike says an individual within the presidency is backing the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Iyorchia Ayu and the Party’s 2023 Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Wike made this claim on Thursday at the inauguration of a campus of the Rivers State University in Ahoada east Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

He promised to name the person backing Ayu and his defenders “at the appropriate time”.

Wike’s camp had been calling for the resignation of Ayu as a way of balancing the equation between the North and South in the party. Crisis has been rocking the party since the selection of Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the running mate of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

“The Chairman and the presidential candidate of the party (Atiku) would meet, they take a decision, nobody represents us (South). Just wait. You people, you will see, just watch. Why are they being arrogant? They are arrogant because they believe somebody in the presidency is backing them?” Wike said.

“I will tell Nigerians at the appropriate time, who is that person in the presidency that is backing them that they are being arrogant? You can’t be arrogant to us. You can’t. You can’t be arrogant to what I have. I will continue to fight this fight. This injustice is enough. We cannot continue to swallow this.

“They’ve already taken who would be Senate President. Which one have they given you (asking the audience)?

“What Wike is saying is ‘keep to the agreement’. Agreement is agreement.”
