Tourism: WTTC declares Mauritius COVID-19 free and safe for visitors

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has endorsed Mauritius as a safe destination for tourists.

This clearance by the apex body for global tourism is coming as a recognition for the efforts put in by the Tourism Authority of Mauritius in setting up of health measures that helped in getting the country ready for tourism especially for lovers of the Indian Ocean shoreline.

According to reports from the Tourism Authority of Mauritius, there has been no local case of COVID-19 recorded in the country since April, which led to a removal of sanitary containment from May 31.

The measures included closing of the borders, the application of strict containment measures, including isolation of the sick and intensive contact tracing and tests.
The country is going through another phase while waiting to welcome its first visitors soon.

Mauritius is part of the African continent geographically and is located in the Indian Ocean. The island nation is located in the intersection of the African continent and the Asian continent and has a fusion of different languages, religions, and cultures.

In 1598, the Dutch took possession of Mauritius, abandoning the island in 1710; the French took control in 1715, renaming it Isle de France.

The WTTC is a hub for more than 200 CEOs, presidents, and directors of the world’s largest travel and tourism companies, from all geographies covering all industries. It promotes travel and tourism as one of the largest economic sectors in the world, supporting one in 10 jobs (330 million) worldwide and generating 10.3% of global GDP.
