PRINCE Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the last elections, has condemned the suspension of elected chairmen and councillors by governors.
Adebayo, in a statement on Twitter, today, said it is undemocratic and grossly illegal to dissolve LGA councils.
“The unconstitutional misconduct of State Governors whimsically dissolving LGA Councils they met on ground is undemocratic and grossly illegal. All votes are equally sovereign,” he wrote.
“It is the same electorates that vote in National, State and Local Government elections. All are sacred.
“Plateau State Governor and other despots should promptly restore dissolved LG Councils in compliance with Supreme Court judgement in Yantaba vs Governor of Katsina State (2022) 1 NWLR PT. 1811 AT 259, and other Supreme Court judgements enforcing section 7(1) of the Constitution.”
This comes after the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, directed the sealing of all 17 local government council secretariats in Plateau State.
In a statement signed by state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, the action is to avoid possible threats to lives and properties in the local government councils as a result of leadership tussle following the suspension of elected chairmen and councilors by the state government.
In replacement of the suspended local government leadership, transition management committee chairmen were appointed and inaugurated for the council areas which did not go down well with the elected Chairmen and Councillors.
