The past few weeks have witnessed attacks, kidnapping and killing of Nigerians by bandits especially in the North.
Kaduna and Zamfara has become the spotlight in the past days with attacks on villages, highways, train and airport, a development that left many dead and several others still missing.
While the East battle with its own form of insecurity with attacks on government facilities and security agents, the North remains a danger zone with kidnapping and killings on daily basis.
A joint report by the Community of Practice Against Mass Atrocities and the Joint Action Civil Society Committee under the aegis of Nigeria Mourns noted that no fewer than 1,545 persons have been killed by terrorists within the first quarter of 2022.
The report also disclosed that at least 1,321 persons were abducted by the terrorists between January 1 and March 30, 2022.
While it has been established that some elites have been victims of these attacks, it’s no doubt that the common Nigerian has been the receiving end and left to suffer fear helplessly.
An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, who spoke for bandits in recent times, severally established that the assailants embark on senseless killings because they have been abandoned by the government and feel cheated with lack of social amenities and good life.
This then establishes the fact that they have not been offended by the masses who have been at the receiving end of the crisis.
What then is the sin of the common Nigerian to have witnessed such traumatic events?
Many questions to ask, “Should the common Nigerian face killings for the supposed sins of the ruling class?” Or “should the masses be punished for voting leaders that lacks the will power to execute their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and properties?”
More to talk about, when you think that one flaw of the masses is their inability and lack of withal to defend themselves and their properties. When has this become a sin or an offense?
Top on the agenda of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) when it sought power from Nigerians was to ensure their security in addition to fighting corruption but this has been left undone.
The Federal Government has proven to be lifeless to their responsibilities and this has been identified by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who vowed to employ the services of foreign mercenaries to end insecurity and the injustice on the common Nigerian.
He said in an interview with newsmen “Why is it that up till now, the security has not gone to kill them? Where are our soldiers? Why have they not done it? That is why I have come to see Mr President. And also I have said that if these actions are not taken, it becomes a must for us as governors to take measures to protect our citizens, even if it means we will import mercenaries from outside the country to do it. If our soldiers fail, I swear to God, we will do that. This issue has gotten to an alarming state.”
