I’ve lost six friends in three years – Davido

Afrobeat singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido has stated reasons behind his latest single ‘Stand Strong’ which was dropped on Friday.

The song which featured American rapper Kanye West has been making waves since its release.

Davido took to Twitter to explain what the song meant to him and the inspiration behind it. The artiste claimed he released the song to remain strong while mourning his six friends who he had lost in three years.

The 29-year-old said he was able to overcome the grief because of the lyrics of the song and anyone who listens to it is praying for his friends.

In a video released on his Twitter, he said, “For the past like two to three years, I lost like six of my best closest friends, just overcoming obstacles and still being able to be here and being alive, that’s what the song is all all about.

“Just know that anytime you’re singing the song, you’re also praying for them.”

Davido lost a friend who is a son of the chairman of Heyden Petroleum, Dapo Abiodun.

In 2017, Davido lost a friend, Olugbemiga Abiodun. He was found dead in his car in October.

Tagbo Umeike died in 2017, followed by his bodyguard, Tijani Olamilekan, who died after a battle with an illness in 2020.

Davido’s aide, Obama DMW, died in June 2021 after complaining of shortness of breath at a Lekki hospital.

In the same year, Davido lost his photographer Fortune Umunname in Lagos in September. He was reported to have drowned.
